Android - A Next Generation Phone Platform?

Google proudly announced android as a next generation open source platform for handheld devices. I am quite exited that there is some competition now and hopefully we can see much improved mobile phone based on technologies like Android.

I my opinion Android in itself is not something which is genius but since its an open source project and you have much more control it opens a wide range of opportunities for hardware vendors and developers who wish to produce next generation mobile devices and software.

I am not sure how long its going to take until Android is known and widely accepted - I hope soon!
